Icon Airmada Review

To date, every Icon helmet had been built around lessons learned from their earlier helmets, according to an Icon spokesperson. Every Icon designer aims to reach the next pinnacle, the epitome of greatness in terms of helmets. The company behind the Airmada states that their latest helmet, the Icon Airmada, is set on to be their prime art of reduction.  Their goal with the Airmada was to reduce and ultimately removed extraneous elements of the product, which would result in a leaner, lower look with better aerodynamics. They’ve wanted to achieve a comfortable ride without  distractions, which the Airmada will most likely do. And according to reviews, the goal was received favorably by customers. The helmet comes pack even just by weighing 4 pounds in weight and just under $200. It’s also DOT approved.

The unit comes in four injection molded, polycarbonate shells composed with five energy absorbing EPS inner liners, that gives a combination of a lighter and better fit among a wider range of head sizes. The Airmada was supposedly styled to cater to a long oval shape which encompasses a fit with high performance, aggressive ride helmet. Other riders disliked the snugness of complete surround, while others enjoyed the supportive feel it brought. It bodes well for the street or track because it is equipped with an integral rear spoiler that provides stability and new locking mechanism for the shield which keeps it stable at higher speeds. The liner is completely removable and washable.  This is the product of Icon’s patented antimicrobial, moisture wicking Hydra-Dry.

The previous shield was re-upped with a new, improved one. Featuring their new Icon optics, their impact resistant shield is now anti-fog and equipped with UV protection. Extending 5 degrees additional on each side, it’s now boosted for peripheral vision. Icon also developed a new rapid release mechanism; a one push-button that serves to release shield on each side in a matter of seconds. Their all new locking mechanism is also a stainless steel post which allows a solid seal lock to keep out dirt and noise.

Airmada’s improvement extends to the venting. Its predecessor has five air vents, this refurbished model has seven- seven BIG vents. There is also a recessed two-channel super vent at the top, a new large mid-chin vent, side chin and top brow vents together with six extractors of more than the industry-leading 100mm each. This gives the Airmada unlimited number of venting combinations. While designed at 45 degrees to the body, its venting works well at lower speeds.

Currently, the helmet is marketed to younger riders with bold tastes. Of course, safety and comfort are not overlooked; however, Airmada does meet world standard safety requirements and each helmet receives Icon’s premium padding, Airmada is well known for its graphics. They boast some of the most forward leaning graphics in the business. Designers offer three packages that glow in the dark, including ChainBrain, Hoodoo, and Charmer. There are also limited edition packages. Graphics are full-colored and crisp giving attention grabbing appeal straight from the box. But it doesn’t end at that, their shield side plates also come with matching designs for custom painted look.

Since not every product on the market is perfect, there had been several complaints regarding the helmet. Chin vents are only operable through the use of moving a slider on the inside of the chin area. However, because of the tight neck opening, several riders experienced scratching themselves with the plastic slider whenever they tried to maneuver the helmet over their heads. Others complained of whistling. The whistling is caused by an incomplete seal on the face shield, which one person claimed he fixed by replacing the shield altogether. Others complained the helmet is noisy with all the air movement, but others could only experience this bothersome problem on longer trips.

Most reviews gave the Airmada a positive feedback. Not bad for a helmet that offers safety and comfort for young riders needing a styling and looking how they want to be. Also, it’s affordable and worth its value.
